Aloe vera gel can be one of the most useful home remedies for cold sores. It can be applied directly to the blister or you can take a supplement that has an aloe base. These medications, like acyclovirus, famciclovirus and valacyclovirus, can be obtained without a doctor's prescription. One very common remedy for cold sores is petroleum jelly. Some people like to use petroleum jelly around the blistered area to help dry it out and allow for more effective treatment.

Another home remedy for cold sores is to apply hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is applied directly to the skin. In some cases, hydrogen peroxide is combined with topical cream to further speed up healing. Be sure to thoroughly wash your hands and avoid touching the affected area if you are using a home remedy.

A third popular home remedy is rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is rubbed into the cold sore to remove any infection or dead skin. You must be very careful when rubbing alcohol onto the sores as you could cause additional infections. It is not advisable to use rubbing alcohol in excess or else you could end up with an infection worse than the sore you started with.
